April marks Planting Month, making it the perfect time to visit one of Sanford’s most striking pieces of public art. The Tobacco Mural at Sanford Rent-All on Wicker Street celebrates Lee County’s agricultural heritage, depicting the journey of taking tobacco to market in vivid detail. Local artist Chris Dalton gave the piece a rare distinction: a three-dimensional mule that makes it only the second 3D mural in North Carolina. It’s one of Sanford’s most impressive pieces of public art, and well worth a stop if you haven’t made one yet.
