Long before Sanford became the town it is today, it had a baseball team worth remembering. This mural honors the athletes who wore a Spinners uniform in the Tobacco State League during the late 1940s, with a special tribute to Howard Auman, the pitcher who led the team to its first league championship in 1946. Created by muralist Scott Nurkin, it captures a chapter of local sports history that deserves its place on the wall. With the 2026 Sanford Spinners season opening May 23rd, there’s no better time to stop by historic downtown, take in the mural, and carry a little of that hometown pride into the new season.
