History comes alive on the corner of Wall Street and Horner Boulevard, where a vibrant mural pays tribute to two pillars of Sanford’s African American community. Completed in 2015 by muralist Scott Nurkin, this powerful tribute honors W.B. Wicker and Link Boykin—two visionary leaders whose contributions shaped the city. Wicker, a beloved educator, served as the first principal of the South Sanford Graded School, while Boykin, a skilled builder and entrepreneur, left his mark on many of Sanford’s historic homes and structures. Made possible through community partnerships and citizen support, the mural stands as a testament to the legacy these trailblazers built and the community that continues to honor their memory.
