Sanford has always been shaped by people who showed up and served, and few did so as meaningfully as Dr. Mary Margaret McLeod. Depicted in vivid color by local artist Chris Dalton, Dr. McLeod holds the distinction of founding Sanford’s first pediatric medical practice in 1946—a practice she devoted more than 40 years of her life to serving. The mural, championed by the Susan Reeves Literary Club and Historic Preservation Planner Liz Whitmore, was installed in 2021 after years of community advocacy and fundraising. Surrounded by images of the children she cared for, Dr. McLeod’s legacy is preserved in a place of honor. This Women’s History Month, her story is especially worth pausing to appreciate.
